You’re not a twat are you

Being pessimistic equals realistic and being optimistic is just for tw@ts. Everybody knows that.

Or in the words of writer Susan Jeffers:
“We have been taught to believe
that negative equals realistic
and positive equals unrealistic.”
(Quote from ‘The Artist’s way’)

Because why would you ever believe something nice will happen right?
I mean, look at the news.

On the other hand…

Look at what Alain de Botton has to say about ‘the news’ (on YouTube, or in his book ‘The News: A User’s Manual’).

Or do yourself a favor and Google Matt Ridley’s ‘The Rational Optimist’, Steven Pinker’s ‘The Better Angels of our Nature’ or anything by Kevin Kelly (kk.org).

These writers offer what I would call a ‘macro view’ on history, on our times and on the future. They go beyond the issues of the day and put things into perspective. And that view can turn things completely upside down. The ‘news’ is not the whole story.

And this, dear reader, concludes my essay.
